RRIF Minimum Withdrawal Calculator (2026)
See the minimum you must take out of your RRIF this year. Enter your other income and you also get the tax the withdrawal adds and whether it pushes you into the OAS clawback. The projection shows how the minimums grow year by year to 95, and what using a younger spouse's age would save.
The minimum climbs every year as the factor rises, even as the balance falls.

Show the math
Minimum = fair market value on January 1 × the CRA prescribed factor for your age (or your spouse's, if elected). Ages 71 and over use the CRA chart. Under 71 the factor is 1 ÷ (90 − age). At 95 and over it is 20%. The tax line adds the withdrawal to your other income with the 2026 Ontario brackets (pension-type income, basic credits only). Withholding applies only above the minimum: 10%/20%/30% (5%/10%/15% federal plus 14% provincial in Quebec). The projection applies each age's factor to the balance after growth.
How this calculator works
The minimum is your RRIF’s value on January 1 times the factor for your age on that date, or your spouse’s age if you chose it. The CRA sets the factors. Under 71 it is 1 ÷ (90 − age). From 71 to 94 there is a chart. From 95 it is 20%.
The projection applies each year’s factor to what is left after the previous year’s withdrawal and growth. That is why the minimum rises even as the balance falls.
Prescribed factors for 2026

| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Factor at 72 | 5.40% |
| Minimum | $21,600.00 |
| Amount above the minimum | $8,400.00 |
| Tax withheld on the excess (20% band) | $1,680.00 |
Assumptions
- The balance you enter is the January 1 value. The projection uses a constant return.
- Qualifying pre-1993 RRIFs use 0.0526 at age 71 rather than 0.0528.
- The tax you finally pay depends on your total income. The tax estimator and withdrawal-order tools handle that.
How to set up your RRIF
The conversion is a form at your current provider. The minimum is worked out for you each January.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
- What is the RRIF minimum withdrawal at 71?
- 5.28% of the balance at the start of the year, for RRIFs set up after 1992. At 72 it is 5.40%, at 75 5.82%, at 80 6.82%, at 85 8.51%, at 90 11.92%, and 20% every year from 95. The minimum starts the year after the RRIF is opened.
- When do I have to convert my RRSP to a RRIF?
- By December 31 of the year you turn 71. You can convert earlier. Below 71 the factor is 1 ÷ (90 − age), so a 65-year-old's minimum is 4%. There is no minimum in the year you convert.
- Can I use my spouse's age for the RRIF minimum?
- Yes, if your spouse or common-law partner is younger. It lowers the minimum every year, keeps more money sheltered and can reduce the OAS clawback. You choose this when the RRIF is set up, before the first payment. It then applies for the life of that RRIF, even if your spouse dies or you separate. You can still take more than the minimum.
- Is tax withheld on RRIF withdrawals?
- Not on the minimum. Above it, 10% is withheld up to $5,000, 20% from $5,001 to $15,000 and 30% above that, outside Quebec. In Quebec the federal part is 5%, 10% and 15%, plus 14% provincial. Withholding is only a prepayment. The whole withdrawal is taxed on your return.
- Can I withdraw more than the minimum?
- Any amount, any time. The minimum is a floor, not a ceiling. Taking more in a low-income year, before the bigger minimums arrive, is a common way to shrink the RRIF and save tax later.
- Do RRIF withdrawals qualify for the pension income credit?
- Yes, from age 65. The first $2,000 of RRIF income a year qualifies for the federal pension income amount, worth about $300, plus matching provincial credits. You can also split up to 50% of RRIF income with a spouse.
- What happens to the RRIF when I die?
- It can pass tax-free to a spouse or a financially dependent child. Otherwise the full value goes on your final return and is taxed in one year.
- How much tax will I pay on my RRIF withdrawal?
- The whole withdrawal is taxable income, on top of your CPP, OAS and pension. Nothing is withheld on the minimum, so the tax is due when you file. Enter your other income to see the tax the withdrawal adds.
- Will my RRIF withdrawal cause an OAS clawback?
- It can. OAS is reduced by 15 cents for every dollar of net income above the threshold ($95,323 for 2026 income). The calculator adds your withdrawal to your other income and shows how much room you have under the line, or how far over you are.
