- : Canada Day
- : Labour Day
- : Thanksgiving Day
- : Remembrance Day
- : Christmas Day
Optional (the employer decides): Easter Monday (Mon, Mar 29), Heritage Day (Mon, Aug 2), National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Thu, Sep 30), Boxing Day (Sun, Dec 26).
Not a general holiday here: Easter Monday (optional general holiday: employer may choose to recognize it); Heritage Day, first Monday in August (optional); National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (optional); Boxing Day (optional).
Holiday pay: Average daily wage = total wages (excluding overtime) divided by days worked, over the 4 weeks before the holiday or the 4 weeks ending on the last day of the prior pay period (employer's choice). If the holiday is worked: 1.5x hourly pay for hours worked plus average daily wage, or a future day off at average daily wage.
Who qualifies: Worked at least 30 work days for the same employer in the 12 months before the holiday; not eligible if absent when scheduled to work the holiday, or absent the scheduled day before or after without consent.
When it falls on a day off: No move to a weekday is stated except Canada Day, which moves to July 2 when July 1 is a Sunday (not the case in 2027). If the holiday falls on a day the employee does not normally work, the employee gets no holiday pay and no day in lieu; if they work it, they get 1.5x for hours worked. A day is a 'normal work day' for irregular schedules if the employee worked that weekday at least 5 times in the previous 9 weeks.

When it falls on a day off: Not stated on the main page; the holiday is not moved. Per the Branch's guidance (calculate statutory holiday pay page and Interpretation Guidelines s.45), an eligible employee whose day off falls on a statutory holiday is paid an average day's pay, and the employer does not have to give another day off. Employer and employees may agree in writing to substitute another day, which is then treated as the holiday.

Holidays that are not what people think
- Bank holidays and public-service holidays are not the same as statutory holidays. Newfoundland and Labrador's government closes on St. Patrick's Day, St. George's Day, Discovery Day and Orangemen's Day, but none of them is a paid holiday for private-sector workers under its Labour Standards Act.
- The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30) is a statutory holiday federally and in British Columbia, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon, not in the other provinces.
- A collective agreement or your contract can give you more holidays than the law. It cannot give you fewer.

Frequently asked questions
- How many statutory holidays are there in 2027?
- It depends on the province. British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon have 11; Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia have 6. Ontario has 9, British Columbia 11 and Alberta 9. Federally regulated workplaces such as banks and airlines follow the Canada Labour Code list instead.
- Is Boxing Day a statutory holiday?
- Only in Ontario and federal workplaces. It is not a statutory holiday in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon, although Alberta lets an employer choose to recognize it. In 2026 Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, so in Ontario most employees get a substitute day off with holiday pay.
- Is Remembrance Day a statutory holiday?
- Yes in Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon and federal workplaces. No in Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec. Nova Scotia and Manitoba have their own Remembrance Day rules for stores and for people who work that day.
- Is Easter Monday a statutory holiday?
- Not under any province's employment standards law, except that in Quebec the employer chooses either Good Friday or Easter Monday as the holiday. Alberta lets employers recognize Easter Monday as an optional holiday. Federal public servants get it under their collective agreements, which is a different thing.
- Is the Civic Holiday in August a statutory holiday in Ontario?
- No. The first Monday in August is not a public holiday under Ontario's Employment Standards Act; an employer can give it, but does not have to. It is a statutory holiday as B.C. Day, Saskatchewan Day and New Brunswick Day, and as the Civic Holiday in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
- How is statutory holiday pay calculated in Ontario?
- Regular wages earned in the 4 work weeks before the work week of the holiday, plus vacation pay payable for those weeks, divided by 20. Regular wages exclude overtime, vacation pay, public holiday pay, premium pay, termination and severance pay. Work on the holiday: premium pay 1.5x, plus public holiday pay, or regular pay plus a substitute day.
- When is Family Day 2027?
- Monday, February 15, 2027, in Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Saskatchewan. The same day is Louis Riel Day in Manitoba, Islander Day in Prince Edward Island and Heritage Day in Nova Scotia. Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, the territories and federal workplaces have no February holiday.
Every list was checked against its source on . Dates for holidays set by a rule (such as "the third Monday in February") were worked out from that rule and checked against the calendar.
