TFSA limit 2027: not announced yet

The CRA has not yet published the TFSA dollar limit for 2027. It usually does so in late autumn, with the indexation factor for the coming year. Until then, no figure anyone quotes is official, including estimates from the inflation rate. The 2026 limit is $7,000, and someone eligible since 2009 who has never contributed has $109,000 of room today.

Why we do not estimate it

The limit is the 2009 base of $5,000 indexed by every year's inflation factor and then rounded to the nearest $500. The unrounded figure has been sitting near a rounding boundary, so a small difference in the indexation factor decides whether 2027 stays at $7,000 or steps up by $500. Sites that publish a guess in September are right about half the time. This page will show the real figure the day the CRA publishes it, and the TFSA room calculator will add it to your room the same day.

The last input arrived on October 19, 2026: September inflation was 3.1%. The CRA turns the year's inflation into the indexation factor and announces the limit after that.

The 2015 limit of $10,000 was a one-year change that was reversed the following year. Everything else follows the indexation-and-rounding rule.

What January 1, 2027 changes for you

  • Your room grows by the 2027 limit.
  • Any amount you withdrew during 2026 comes back as room.
  • If you turn 18 in 2027, your room starts that year. If you became a Canadian resident in 2026, your room started in 2026 at the full limit.
  • Room is not lost if you do not use it. It carries forward for life.

The TFSA room calculator works out your room from the CRA figure or from your history, and shows the 1% a month penalty if you are over.

Frequently asked questions

What is the TFSA limit for 2027?
Not announced. The CRA publishes it in late autumn together with the indexation factor for 2027. The 2026 limit is $7,000. This page will carry the 2027 figure the day it is published.
How is the TFSA limit decided?
The base amount of $5,000 set in 2009 is indexed to inflation every year and then rounded to the nearest $500. Because of the rounding, the limit stays the same for several years and then steps up by $500, which is why guessing it from the inflation rate alone is unreliable.
What is the total TFSA room if I have never contributed?
$109,000 at the end of 2026, for someone who was 18 or older in 2009 and a Canadian resident every year since. From 2027 the new limit is added on top. Your own figure is in CRA My Account, and the TFSA room calculator works it out from your birth year and your history.
When does the new room appear?
January 1. Withdrawals you made during 2026 are added back the same day, along with the 2027 limit. Contributing before January 1 to replace a 2026 withdrawal is an over-contribution.
Is the limit the same in every province?
Yes. The TFSA is federal, and the limit is the same across Canada. Only the age you can open an account differs, 18 or 19 depending on the province, though room accrues from 18 everywhere.
